Book Recommendation #6!

Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives BetterDo Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better by Tracey Stewart
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book has tons of Do-It-Yourself projects that are simple and easy to follow. It touches on the various pets we have in our lives and how to better understand them. The author also introduces us to animals we can find in a backyard or farm setting, giving us tips on how we can live side-by-side peacefully with certain animals that are normally seen as 'pests', usually misunderstood by humans. Also complete with lovely illustrations! I feel that this book could be a good read especially for children and possibly grow into fun bonding experiences with the whole family!

Dead Pets Don't Lie: The Official and Imposing Undercover Report That Exposes What the FDA and Greedy Corporations Are Hiding about Popular Pet FoodsDead Pets Don't Lie: The Official and Imposing Undercover Report That Exposes What the FDA and Greedy Corporations Are Hiding about Popular Pet Foods by Joe Ardis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A very detailed read about the pet food industry. A must-read for pet owners who don't research before buying food for their pets. This will be a real eye-opener, especially for those who buy food based on FDA or AAFCO approved brands.. You realise that AAFCO has no regulatory authority (as stated on their own website, and FDA can't monitor every single pet food.
The book also elaborates on individual ingredients that are harmful for pets, though they are included in the ingredients list of some pet food, how 'by-products' or 'meals' sometimes includes euthanized animals/pets, what to look for when buying pet food, and so much more.

Homemade Dehydrated Treats

Made some homemade dehydrated treats for Skye and Luna!

Since Omni Frozen Food had a August promotion, I decided to purchase the meat from them instead of the supplier I used last year. (S.S.Kim) Response and delivery were prompt, will definitely consider purchasing from them again next time!

Luna seems to really like chicken necks, that was partially why I wanted to order from Omni.

* If you dehydrate raw, please make sure your dehydrator can heat up enough to kill the bacteria in the meat. *

Meat I ordered (as stated on their site) :

Green Lipped Half Shell Mussel x 1 packet
Fresh Duck Neck x 1KG
Beef Tendon x 2KG
Beef Liver x 300g (free because of promotion)
Pig Kidney x 300g (free because of promotion)
Fresh Chicken Neck x 3KG
Chicken Fillet x 4KG
HGP Free Chicken Breast Boneless Skinless x 2KG
Pork Fillet/Tenderloin x 2KG
Chicken Leg Boneless Skinless x 4KG

Mussels

Duck Neck + Beef Tendon

Beef Liver + Pig Kidney

Chicken Neck

Chicken Fillet

Pork Fillet

Chicken Leg

My dehydrator actually stopped working when I was dehydrating the tendons, ended up putting half in the oven to bake because I didn't want the meat to spoil. (I had not much space left in the fridge)

Thank God my dad and I managed to get the dehydrator working again. (the inner fan was not oiled)

Not sure why they gave me two different brands of chicken legs...

Also, I didn't realise that this part of the chicken would have so much fats :P Take note if you don't want to spend an hour trimming them off.

This is the final product!! I always store them in the freezer so they last long.

Final Products

This is what each looks like after dehydrating.
I did add apple cider vinegar to the chicken fillets, chicken legs and pork fillet. Just a cap full in a bowl of water to dilute it. (Please make sure your furkid has no reactions to ACV if you are adding it to their treats)

Steps (I take) for making treats:
- Cut the meat into bite-sized pieces (or however big you want it to be)
- Dip the slices into a bowl of diluted apple cider vinegar
- Arrange the slices onto the dehydrator tray
- Dehydrate for a few hours (depends on the meat and your machine settings)
- Store in an airtight bag (include a silica gel packet or store in the fridge/freezer if necessary)

WARNING to all pet owners, check the food before feeding!

*THIS WAS JUST ONE CAN, OUT OF 200+*

⚠To all pet owners, always mash/cut up the food you buy to make sure there are no foreign objects inside that could harm your pet. ⚠

I actually like this brand, the foods are 70% out of proper meat, with no by-products or "meals". Free ranged, grain-free & made in NZ. Out of the 200+ cans I bought at pet expo SG, only this particular can had a huge piece of plastic in the food. 🤔

I have already emailed the company & their distributor in Singapore, the company has yet to reply (has been a month already), the distributor said they would get back to me after the company replies them. On the ReallyPetFood site, the phone number is the distributor's, so I'm not sure if they are under the same company.

(I didn't email them for compensation, just want them to acknowledge their mistake & hopefully prevent the same thing from happening again)

Book Recommendation #3!

Heart to Heart, Hand in Paw: How One Woman Finds Faith and Hope Through the Healing Love of AnimalsHeart to Heart, Hand in Paw: How One Woman Finds Faith and Hope Through the Healing Love of Animals by Peggy Frezon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Such a wonderful read! I love that the author included some photos so we could have a better idea of what everything looked like, also making it much more palpable as the story itself was so out of the ordinary. It was so fascinating to read about the many ups and downs that happened in Luanne's life, seemed like there never was a dull moment. It was heartbreaking to read about the things she had to go through, even as a young child. It was so inspiring to read about them overcoming struggles as a family (with God at the helm), from being practically homeless, to building their own house and filling it with so much love. How she saw herself in the animals she cared for, and how they helped and supported each other in their own ways.

Skye's 4th birthday!

Skye turned 4 on 21st June 2017!!!
We decided to go out as a family to two places for brunch+lunch - Wildseed Cafe and Ulu Ulu Pet Cafe.
Wildseed Cafe is located at 3 Park Lane in Seletar.

We actually arrived before their lunch menu was available (to order), so we decided to order some cakes instead. For $8, you can pick 4 of their 'petit cakes'. A reasonable price since the cakes were very delicious and were also flavour combinations I have not tried before.

The tea here was expensive though. 1 pot of tea was $8. EIGHT DOLLARS. We actually ordered 2 pots :P Earl Grey and something else. Nothing special and a little diluted.

Assorted cakes from Wildseed Cafe

Garden behind Wildseed Cafe

After eating, we walked around the small garden they had behind the cafe. We had to carry Skye as the ground was too hot, Luna was in the stroller :)

After Wildseed Cafe, we headed over to Ulu Ulu Pet Cafe.
It is located at 10 Neo Tiew Lane, D'Kranji Farm Resort, not easy to get to if you don't drive in.

We arrived just as the owners of the cafe were setting everything up, so we had to walk around the area to pass the time. (just 10 minutes :P )

The cafe is quite cosy with some indoor seatings and a larger outdoor area with more seatings available.

At Ulu Ulu Pet Cafe

The cafe provides drinking water, pee pads and toys for their fur-customers, plus a mop if any accidents happen! Though I wouldn't recommend playing with the toys, not sure how hygienic that will be...

Water, pee pads and cutlery area
toys and sink area

Ulu Ulu Pet Cafe also has a pool area for furkids who want to cool off in the heat! The cafe's resident dog (puppy) kept jumping into the water :D There is also a shower and drying area next to the pool.

Temporary pool area at Ulu Ulu Pet Cafe

The outdoor area is much bigger than the cafe's interior, but it might get too hot especially if you come here for lunch. There are 'patio umbrellas' at the tables, but I'm not sure if that will help. The ground will also get scalding hot at noon, so make sure you check the temperature before letting your furkids run around!

Luna in the stroller

They have a variety of meals to choose from, including food for fur kids!! The prices are very affordable, compared to other pet-friendly cafes which charge $10-$25 for one meal. The meals came around 10-15 minutes after ordering but that was not an issue as we were busy playing at the outdoor area with Skye.

Menu at Ulu Ulu Pet Cafe

Chicken and Beef for the furkids
Lasagne for the hooman

I ordered one portion of chicken and beef for Skye and Luna to share. (some of the chicken has been removed, that's why it looks much lesser compared to the beef)

For us humans, we got lasagne (x2), baked salmon, eggs benedict and some cold drinks.

The meals were a bit small for the price, but still decent. The eggs in the eggs benedict were still runny on the inside and the salmon was well cooked.

The lasagne I had was yummy and not too salty. However, it tasted like those frozen ones you would get at a supermarket. Hopefully that was not the case :o

Skye with her birthday lunch! I actually made that number "4" 'cake topper' out of the new sake Kitkat's cardboard packaging :P Worked out well!

Her birthday meal!

After our lunch, we decided to head over to the nearby Kranji Reservoir to walk around. Unfortunately for us, it started drizzling so we had to cut it short.

Hopefully Skye and Luna enjoyed the outing as much as we humans did!
I actually couldn't find Luna's harness so I could not let her out of the stroller in case my makeshift 'harness' (another collar around her waist) slips off :O Definitely have to buy a new one because it seems to have disappeared... :(

Book Recommendation #2!

Faithfully Yours: The Amazing Bond Between Us and the Animals We LoveFaithfully Yours: The Amazing Bond Between Us and the Animals We Love by Peggy Frezon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

"Faithfully Yours" is a collection of many inspiring true stories about animals and humans. It is lovely to read so many fascinating stories about how humans and animals save each other in so many different ways, physically and emotionally, and how we can learn so much just by interacting with them.

I love that this book included stories about so many different animals, not just dogs and cats! It took me longer than usual to finish this book as the stories were making me tear up so often! While reading, thinking about the animals that are and were in my life, the what-ifs and the future made it much more emotional for me.

I would recommend this book to anyone. For pet owners, I'm sure we can relate to some of the things in the book. To people who have negative feelings towards animals/pets, this book will be an eye-opening read to how animals can be more 'human' than us humans.
